His Excellency Shavkat Mirziyoev,

The President of the Republic Of Uzbekistan

Your Excellency!

I want to Express my appreciation for Your open and heartfelt discussion during our meeting in Tashkent on 10 May 2017. For me, it was a great honour to meet you in person, and I'm grateful for the preparation and organisation of my visit.

I would like to thank you for your personal commitment and efforts to promote human rights in Uzbekistan, in particular, the adoption of the Action Strategy for 2017-2021, judicial and legal reforms, as well as the abolishment of exit visas.

This visit gave me the opportunity to understand the complexities and challenges in the full realisation of human rights in Uzbekistan and to identify possible areas in which my Office can further support authorities, civil society, national human rights institution and the international community.

I am grateful for the positive engagement of Uzbekistan with my Office, and although we are ready to continue our cooperation from Geneva, I'm glad that my regional office for Central Asia will provide Uzbekistan direct support in the region.

Please accept, your Excellency, the assurances of my highest esteem.

Zeid Ra'ad al-Hussein,

The UN high Commissioner for human rights
